Biology

We hope to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for biology, including in further study and careers that may include biology.

The course aims to develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of biology and how they relate to each other, and considers how society makes decisions about scientific issues.

It will build upon work covered at GCSE and will involve detailed study of topics such as cells, plant and animal transport systems and biological molecules, as well as analysing processes such as respiration and photosynthesis. You will also cover challenging new areas such as biotechnology and gene technology that are advancing rapidly and have far-reaching consequences for our lives, our health, and our understanding of the world around us.

Success in biology leads to a wide range of higher education and career opportunities such as in agriculture, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, dentistry, environmental sciences, food science, forensic science, genetic engineering, medicine, micro-biology, pathology, pharmacy, and veterinary science.

Other possibilities include animal welfare, beauty therapy, childcare, dietician, midwifery, nursing, horticulture, physiotherapy, psychology, speech therapy, sports science, and teaching.
