Course Details

Biology is the scientific study of life itself. Throughout this two year course you will develop knowledge of the wide range of living things and an understanding of the life processes that they all share in common. You will study a broad range of topics from cell structure and biological molecules to the physiology of mammals and plants as well as more specialist topics such as microbiology and disease. In addition, the specification contains a large component of ecology, conservation and evolution.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 9/A* - 4/C including English Language, Maths and 2 grade 6/B's in Biology and a second Science or Double Science. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project, prior to enrolment, to prepare you for A Level Biology.

What you need to know

What will I study?

At Chichester College you will study the Edexcel syllabus. The course is divided into seven topics, four of which are taught in the first year, which are; 1: Biological molecules; 2: Cells, Viruses and Reproduction of Living Things, 3: Classification and Biodiversity, 4: Exchange and Transport. In the second year the additional topics are: 5: Energy for Biological Processes, 6: Microbiology and Pathogens, 7: Modern genetics. Practical skills are delivered in an embedded style throughout the two years of the course and are assessed through a Practical Endorsement component which requires you to competently undertake 12 practical assessments. You should note that there is a significant maths requirement embedded within the 2 year specification and you will be expected to continually work on developing your mathematical skills.

How will I be taught?

You will attend two sessions a week, a 2 hour and a 3 hour class with a half an hour break which consist of a combination of theory and practical lessons. You will also be expected to carry out independent research and study. A Level Biology uses a Flipped Learning System in which students learn some basic facts prior to the lesson which are then developed by the lecturer through individual and group activities in class.

How will I be assessed?

The content of the seven taught topics are assessed through three written papers at the end of the two year linear course. All Year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway, which may include external exams, that will allow you to progress to Year 2.

Where can it lead to...

There are number of routes you can take following successful completion of a course. Further study can include Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship where you will expand your skills through study whilst earning a wage. Or you may choose to move directly into employment.
