Learners study a range of units which may include Information Technology Systems, Creating Systems to Manage Information, Using Social Media for Business, Programming, Data Modelling, Website Development, Computer Games Development, Cyber Security and Incident management, IT Service Delivery, IT Technical Support and Management, Digital 2D and 3D Graphics and Digital Animation and Effects. Some units are assessed by exam, others by internal and external assessment.
There are 2 pathways: The 180 Extended Diploma and the 120 Credit Diploma.
On the 180 Credit Diploma, learners will study seven mandatrory units and six optional units. This is a full time programme equivalent to 3 A-levels.
On the 120 Credit Diploma pathway, learners will study six mandatory units and four optional units.
Learners will complete a range of practical activities which will include building a computer system, setting up a computer network, creating a website and creating a computer animation. Learners will also have an opportunity to build 3D models and to create a working Virtual Reality computer game.
Learners will also complete work experience within the field of IT.
There is no exam in this course, learners will be continually assessed by coursework. Clear deadlines will be set for each assignment. These deadlines must be met in order to ensure you have the opportunity of gaining Merit and Distinction grades.
Ex-students of this course at Cirencester College have studied various university courses. Many have studied courses in disciplines such as Cyber Security, Computing and Games Design. One or two have studied Computer Science, if they studied A level Maths alongside the BTEC National in IT Level 3.
Whilst the college does not require students to have their own computer for this course, students would benefit from having a computer at home on which they could complete their assignments.

Guest speakers from local IT based organisations visit to discuss the work they do and inform students of any apprenticeship schemes and job opportunities available.
Previous trips have included visits to Bletchley Park.

Computer/Games Developers expect to earn a starting salary of £19,000, but with experience this rises up to as much as £70,000. A Web Developer can earn on average up to £50,000 per annum.
