Biology

Why study biology?

Biology is constantly advancing and almost every day, we hear about a breakthrough in the news, whether it be related to health and medicine, environmental challenges, or agriculture. Biology is relevant to us all.

Biology equips us to make more informed decisions about our own health and lifestyle, as well as the way we interact with the world around us.

An understanding of DNA, genetics, and the principles of gene manipulation will enable pupils to join and perhaps lead the debate on future technologies.

The subject also enables us to assess the impact that organisms, including humans, have on each other and their environments. By understanding the ways in which molecules interact, we can appreciate the complex biochemistry and physiology that underpin the survival and success of organisms in their environments.

Facilities

The biology department boasts fully equipped laboratories, serviced by highly skilled technicians. The most advanced data-logging apparatus, along with modern microscopes, some of which are dedicated sixth form microscopes, allow us to explore the subject in detail.

We are also very proud of our dedicated conservation area, with its own pond and outdoor learning space.

A Level

At A Level, pupils follow the AQA 7402 specification, which focuses on: biological molecules, and cells; how organisms exchange substances with their environment; genetic information, variation and the relationships between organisms; energy transfer in and between organisms; how organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environment; genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems; and the control of gene expression.

Achievements

Every year pupils take part in the Royal Society of Biology’s Intermediate Olympiad and Biology Olympiad, winning bronze, silver and gold awards. GCSE pupils also take on the Royal Society of Biology Challenge, again with success.

Having teamed up with the school’s art department, we were delighted when the artwork of two pupils made the shortlist of the prestigious Nancy Rothwell Competition, another award run by the Royal Society of Biology. This national competition gives pupils the opportunity to combine their artistic talents with detailed observations and anatomical knowledge.

Progression

Beyond the curriculum

The Lower Sixth attend cells talks in the Explorer Dome, which informs their work for the Biology Intermediate Olympiad run by the Royal Society of Biology.

The Upper Sixth residential field trip takes us to Nettlecombe Court Field Studies Council, where habitats studied include the rocky shore at Helwell Bay, River Embercombe, and sand dunes at Braunton. The gene technology workshops run by Exeter University are also excellent. By the Upper Sixth, pupils always do very well in their final Biology Olympiad.

Staff

Mrs Julia Metcalf joined the school in 2008 and has been Head of Biology since January 2014. She also currently holds the post of Director of Science at Exeter School, a role that moves on a three-year rotation between the Heads of Science. She is supported by four specialist biology teachers and a science technician.
