About this course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who want to pursue a career in a range of engineering fields. It is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a route into university or higher education.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering has a work related focus and prepares students for employment in the engineering sector or to progress to higher education and a vocational degree programme. It is broadly equivalent to 3 “A” Levels

The course consists of units which have a credit value which should provide a combined total of 180 credits to achieve the BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering (formerly National Diploma in Engineering).

How will I be assessed?

All units are internally assessed using a strict set of grading criteria and a summative unit grade awarded at pass, merit or distinction. Successful students will be awarded an overall triple grade e.g. DDD, DMM MMP based on points boundaries.

In line with the new BTEC National, there will be a written examination at the end of year 1 for the Engineering Principles unit

Course books and reading will be recommended during the induction process.

Full uniform/PPE and safety glasses are mandatory. Successful applicants will be sent details of PPE requirements with joining instructions. The College will be able to assist with information regarding requirements.

Progression

What Next?

Students will leave the college with a broad portfolio of qualifications that will enable progression to work at a technician level and advanced modern apprenticeship, or go on to higher education at Degree level.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4
  • To include English and maths GCSEs at 9-4

From College

  • Relevant level 2 qualification at merit grade or higher
  • English and/or maths at level 2 or higher
