Engineering (BTEC Extended Diploma)

Course Overview

The engineering sector continues to suffer from a skills gap and needs to keep up with rapidly developing technologies. This course has been designed to give new entrants to the engineering sector the underpinning knowledge and specific skills needed to meet the needs of modern mechanical and electrical engineering industries.

This BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering course is equivalent to three A Levels over two years, and includes a  wide range of units to allow learners to focus on their chosen career or area of interest and progress into employment or higher education

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above including intermediate/higher tier Maths and a Science subject

Course Delivery

Several of the core units are common across different engineering titles and include health and safety, mathematics, science, communications, Cad, product design and project planning and implementation for success in the specialist units and the engineering workplace. 

Progression Opportunities

Learners wishing to progress into an apprenticeship and/or degree courses should seriously consider this qualification. Career opportunities exist in mechanical, electrical, electronic, and other technological and engineering sectors.

This qualification attracts UCAS points that will enable you to progress on to a university degree. Learners completing the course have progressed to Swansea University, Brunell University, Plymouth University, Cardiff University, the University of South Wales and Aberdeen University to study for the B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical/Electronic Engineering and other career degrees, or secured apprenticeships with companies such as Tata Steel and GE Aviation.

Staying at Gower College Swansea you could choose either the HND in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
