What will I be doing?
This course will be delivered full time over 36 weeks for 30 hours per week on the college campus. There’ll be a minimum of 5 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks work experience placement. You’ll visit a number of leading manufacturing companies in Wales.
As this is a practical, work-related course, on which you’ll learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. You’ll study units such as:
- Health and safety
- Communication
- Mechanical principles and applications
- Mathematics
- Finishing/secondary processes
- Measurement and inspection techniques
- Computer aided drafting
- Properties and applications of engineering materials
- Engineering drawing for technicians
You’ll be assessed through practical and written assignments, presentations, portfolios, demonstrations and observation. Upon completion, you’ll achieve:
- Level 3 in Engineering (Mechanical)
- Level 2 PEO (Professional Employer Organisation) – 6 units chosen to support specific industry requests
- Skills Activities
- Maths and English
- Other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set
What is expected of me?
To enter this course, you’ll need to pass an Apprenticeship aptitude test (integral screening exercise (Skillbuilder/Vark)) and have:
- 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including:
- English or Welsh First Language,
- Grade B in Maths
- Three other Grade Cs, preferably in Science or related subjects
Full commitment to attendance is required. You’ll need to be able to work independently and as part of a team. A strong desire to work in the engineering industry is also required, as progression from this course is to an apprenticeship. Everyone is expected to abide by the college ethos and to be willing to participate in a minimum of 5 weeks work placement.

You’ll be given a tool kit worth approximately £200.00 when you successfully complete the course.
You’ll need to supply your own stationery e.g. folders, subject dividers, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, compass, ruler and scientific calculator.
