Engineering

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

The aim of this two year course is to prepare you for employment in the engineering sector, Higher Education at university or as part of the modern Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme. It provides practical and theoretical skills in electrical and mechanical units. You will study Mathematics, Science, Electronics, Manufacturing Technology, Materials, Design and Computer Aided Design (CAD).

In Year Two you will create a practical project and a portfolio of evidence. Mechanical, electronic, design and applied mechanical/electronic units will also be covered giving a well-rounded programme of study across the main engineering disciplines.

In Year One you’ll visit local companies to see engineering in action, take part in dedicated taster sessions at the University of Portsmouth and experience a unique behind-the-scenes educational session at Thorpe Park. In Year Two you will have the opportunity to complete work experience with a local engineering company. The course is taught as practically as possible within the electronic laboratory and mechanical workshops.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 (or equivalent) including Science, Mathematics and English Language. You should ideally have a grade 5 or equivalent in Mathematics. Suitable additional qualifications may include: GCSEs in Engineering, Electronics and Design Technology in Engineering or ICT. To support the five GCSEs, Vocational qualifications such as BTEC Level 2 in Engineering at Merit grade are appropriate.

The units of study are regularly reviewed to be in line with the needs of local employers and university course entry requirements. Therefore, the definitive list may change. However, an example of the units that could be selected are as follows.

In Year One you may study subject units such as:

  • Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
  • Mathematics for Technicians
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Fabrication Technology
  • Engineering Design
  • Secondary and Finishing Processes
  • Computer-Aided Drafting
  • Electronic Circuit Manufacture
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits

In Year Two you may study subject units such as:

  • Mechanical Principles
  • Engineering Project
  • Communications for Technicians
  • CNC Machining
  • Further Mathematics
  • Microprocessor Systems
  • Engineering Materials
  • Electronic Measurement and Testing

The subject units will be taught as practically as possible within the electronic laboratories, specialised ICT software teaching rooms and the mechanical workshop. Our facilities enable practical experience of dedicated engineering software to be used such as Autodesk, AlphaCAM and PicAxe.

In Year 2 you will be required to design and build an engineering project which will be presented on our project day to lecturing staff and invited guests from local industry and universities. Many students have secured the offer of employment at this event as it is an excellent opportunity to showcase their engineering abilities. All our classrooms offer full ICT facilities.

Our teaching staff bring their industrial experience into the classroom, this includes lecturers experienced in:

  • Mechanical Engineering Project management, delivering components to the automotive sector
  • Electronic Engineering specialising in fire decetion systems
  • Experience in high volume mass production environments
  • Senior technical design for a global company specialising in extraction systems
  • Tooling engineer specialising in the design and manufacture of injection mould tools for the automotive sector

The assessment procedure for each unit involves completing a program of assignments, tasks or phase tests. The evidence produced will satisfy Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria. All assessment procedures are subject to scrutiny by an external moderator appointed by Edexcel.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of my course. My lecturers blended theoretical and practical teaching in a way that kept my interest up at all times. I really benefited from completing a week's work experience at a local engineering company too. This College is an exciting place to learn. The mix of new people, experiences and training has given me a fantastic springboard from which to launch myself into a career in manufacturing engineering.
