Course Description

This course advances on vehicle knowledge from the level 2 motor vehicle course through learning and challenges such as diagnosis and rectification of auxiliary electrical system faults in vehicles. A number of other units are also covered on this course to gain learners the knowledge and skills needed to pursue employment within the area of Motor Vehicle.

Learners need to have a very good understanding of vehicles and a very good level of hands on skills to be able to study this level 3 course. This is a one year course, for 15 hours per week involving practical learning, classroom learning, practical assessments and online multiple choice exams.

This is a very practical course as hands on skills are essential for this area of work. Learners will be taught in our state of the art bespoke workshops and classrooms by industry experienced tutors and technicians.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have 4 GCSEs grade C/4 and above, including English and Maths and have completed a Level 2 Motor Vehicle.

Applicants with only the Level 2 Motor Vehicle qualification can apply and will be considered. Alternatively individuals should have 1-5 years’ experience in the relevant trade.

Details

The Level 3 qualification provides teaches learners skills through a mixture of practical work and classroom work. The practical work develops hands-on skills whilst the classroom work develops knowledge needed to succeed. Maths is embedded into this course.

Topics on this course include:

  • Health and safety
  • Job roles within the automotive industry
  • Materials fabrication, tools and measuring devices in the automotive environment
  • Specialist units include:
  • Diagnosis and rectification of engine system faults
  • Diagnosis and rectification of chassis system faults
  • Diagnosis and rectification of auxiliary electrical system faults
  • Inspection of light vehicles

Students will also attend tutorial sessions on a weekly basis where topics to develop employability skills will be covered.

Work Experience

There is no specific work experience required or undertaken for this course however there is a strong practical element.

Progression

Employment or the VCQ Level 3 (conversion course, day release/part time) - alongside employment in the motor industry as an apprentice.
