Join us on our level 2 diploma designed to cover all light-vehicle technologies at an advanced level. It’s suitable for both school leavers and/or mature students who want the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in repairing motor vehicles. This course covers all main systems in-depth, as well as giving you practical experience in maintaining them. This light vehicle route allows you to have the flexibility to develop your knowledge and skills across a variety of specialist areas to prepare you for further studies or employment.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

Year 1

This diploma is a vocational subject-based learning programme covering all elements of both the theory and practical aspects of the following: light vehicle routine maintenance; operating principles of engines; tyres; brakes; steering and suspension systems; operating principles and maintenance of transmission; and electrical systems.

Personal and social development and functional skills are compulsory elements of the course. The programme has been designed to improve your understanding of these different light vehicle systems and to further develop knowledge and skills in maintenance procedures on all major systems, including topics such as engine operating principles; braking suspension, steering and tyre systems; transmission systems; fuel and exhaust systems; charging and electric systems; and compulsory health and safety, tools and equipment and job roles in the automotive industry.

The course will have a practical focus with the emphasis on gaining the skills and understanding of tasks on light vehicles. The aim is to give you confidence in procedures to an advanced level and full understanding of the related theory, so you will be given opportunities to practice skills and techniques learnt in our fully equipped light vehicle workshop.

Internal progressing learners will have sucessfully completed a level 1 Motor Vehicle studies plus both GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, plus 2 further GCSEs at grade 4 (C) including a science or technical based subject.

Direct entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of study or work. GCSEs in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required, plus 2 further GCSEs at grade 4 (C) including a science or technical based subject.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold both English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications at level 2.

The course is designed to give the students hands-on practical experience on carrying out maintenance and repair procedures and so is delivered and assessed practically in the most part with an element of written assessments to ensure systems theory is understood, coupled with online exams. Your tutor will provide explanations, demonstrations, and guide you through practical activities. Practical assessments are based on observations of practical activities, written assessments are based on completion of written assessments. On completion of the course, you will earn a full IMI level 2 diploma. You will be assessed through the use of practical, theory, and online assessments that will be witnessed and signed off by our specialists. You will complete a portfolio of evidence covering workshop tasks and related online exams and phase tests for each topic you study.

Additional Costs

You will be expected to supply and wear personal protective equipment (workshop uniform) when carrying out practical activities in the workshops, which should consist of black steel toe cap safety boots, plain navy all in one overall. The kit would be expected to cost between £30 and £45.

This course is for students considering a career in the automotive industry. The qualification offers you progression opportunities to study the Light Vehicle Diagnostics Diploma level 3. You will need to demonstrate attendance of at least 90% and gain a reference from your Programme Lead in order to progress to the next level. Alternatively, students are encouraged to apply for apprenticeships or employment opportunities following the successful completion of this course.

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event/Interview at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.

All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.
