OVERVIEW

The course is not about learning to use tools or just training in a programming language. Instead the emphasis is on computational thinking.

Computational thinking is a kind of reasoning used by both humans and machines. Thinking computationally is an important life skill.

The course has an emphasis on abstract thinking, general problem-solving, algorithmic, mathematical reasoning, scientific and engineering-based thinking. You will also learn practical skills in VB.net and SQL.

A Level:

  • Paper 1: Programming 40% of A Level
  • Paper 2: Theory 40% of A Level
  • Coursework: 20% of A Level

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You must have achieved five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above including Maths and English Language. You may also need certain grades for your chosen subjects.

A2 Paper 1, Paper 2 and coursework:

  • Paper 1 is a practical exam where students study pre-release material to work on in an exam.
  • Paper 2 is a written theory exam.
  • Coursework is a practical programming project worth 20% of the overall A Level.

This qualification will provide you with a range of transferable skills so that you can progress onto a range of our HE courses.

Past students have progressed onto our foundation degree in Computing and have then completed the BSc (Hons) Computing top-up degree. After completing this degree you are well equipped to pursue a career in web design, web development, IT consulting, IT systems management, systems analysis, games development, data analysis and programming.

You can progress onto computer science at university or careers in computing. You may decide to pursue a career in medicine, vetinary science, dentistry or biochemistry.

Please note that many university computer science courses also ask for A Level mathematics.

The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for university we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home- fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.

You only need to apply once for A Level programmes. After receiving your application form you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will have a chance to discuss which specific A Level subjects you would like to enrol on.
