About the department

For those of you already in employment within the construction industry, options exist to study courses on day-release, block-release or evening programmes according to the trade. Apprenticeships are also available. You will be taught by a dedicated team of tutors with experience and knowledge of the business world.

What are the Course Requirements?

For students who have recently been in education the requirements are likely to include one of the following: A BTEC Level 2 qualification in Construction or a related vocational area, GCSEs equivalent to four passes at grade C, including Maths, English and Science. More mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include experience of paid and/or un-paid employment in the civil engineering industry.

The qualification offers an interesting programme for the younger learners who are clear about their employment choice and are working in the Civil Engineering industry. For adult students the qualification confirms and extends their work experience in the sector. It also provides a suitable qualification for those who have changed career and moved in to Civil Engineering following a career break. Successful completion of the programme allows the student to apply for Tech. Eng. of the Institution of Civil Engineer.

A variety of assessment methods are used on the course such as case studies, assignments, work-based assessments together with projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.

The course is part time for a duration of one day per week for two years. Fees: To cover tuition, Examination and the Edexcel registration are reviewed annually and published separately. Further information is available on application. Equipment: No special equipment is necessary although a scale ruler, scientific calculator and basic stationery will be beneficial. For site visits a pair of safety boots is advised. Hard hats and reflective safety clothing are provided for student use.

This qualification provides access, to the HNC Civil Engineering course at oaklands College. Candidates wishing to progress other part or full time degree programmes in Civil Engineering or related disciplines would need to confirm entry requirements with the appropriate providers.

Careers


Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in Construction can lead to progression on to the HNC in Construction or other Higher Education courses or alternatively into employment within the construction and property industry.
