About the department

Our Beauty courses combine classroom theory with practical skills, making sure you are ready to work in this creative industry.

You will have the chance to gain first hand experience of working with real clients in Oasis, the College's training salon based at the Welwyn Garden City Campus.

The salon is fully equipped to industry standard, so you will be able to get a feel for what it is like to work in a professional salon.

We have highly qualified tutors with vast industry experience, who build links with local businesses and prospective employers to help you get the best out of your career.

Your teachers and assessors have a minimum of five years industry experience supporting your learning and assessment targets and plans.

Each of them bring specialist knowledge and experience to the areas you will study. You will also be supported by an internal verifier throughout the assessment process.

Important Course Information

What are the Course Requirements?

A Level 1 hairdressing qualification.

All students who have a keen interest in hairdressing will enjoy this course. You will need to be organised, committed and willing to work independently and as part of a group, as the course is both rigorous and demanding in an academic and practical sense. If you think this suits you, then you will find the course interesting, stimulating, challenging and very rewarding.

This qualification will develop a complete repertoire of technical skills to prepare you for employment as a junior hairdresser/stylist. Units covered will include:
Follow health and safety practice in the salon, Client consultation for hair services, Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp, The art of dressing hair, Cut women's hair, The art of colouring hair, Colour and lighten hair and Salon reception duties.
You will also study English and maths as part of your programme at the appropriate level for you. Work experience, enrichment and employability will also form an integral part of your course.

Assessment is evidenced in a portfolio of work. Assessments include examination, observation, written assignments and oral questioning. You will treat clients in the commercial salon and will receive practice treatments from students.

It is a requirement that students will attend a late night weekly session until 8.30pm and will need to arrange appropriate transport home at this time, as this reflects industry standards. You will be required to purchase a uniform and kit through the college (approximate cost £270)

Progression onto Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies or employment.
