A Level Psychology

A Levels

Psychology is the study of people: How they think, how they act, react and interact with each other. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour, thoughts and feelings, as well as the motivations that underlie behaviour. In a sense, you are already a psychologist: After all most of us are interested in what makes people tick, and how this understanding can help people with difficulties or solve problems in society. But Psychology is also a science. As part of the course, you will learn about the scientific methods psychologists use to observe, measure and analyse behaviour and mental processes.

Important Course Information

What are the Course Requirements?

To study A Level Psychology you are required to have 6 GCSE's Grade 9-5 or A* to C, including English and Maths, one of which must be a B or 6 grade. You will also be required to have a B or 6 in GCSE Science.

Some people assume that Psychology is just common-sense: This could not be further from the truth. Psychology is a challenging subject that will introduce you to new methods, concepts and language. To achieve your full potential in Psychology you will need to commit at least five hours a week of independent study. You will also need to participate in class presentations, group discussions and debates. Being confident in GCSE maths will be an advantage, and a positive attitude towards statistics and arithmetic is essential as research methods and analysis are a central aspect of the course. Psychology is an excellent subject to help your progression onto University, as it helps you develop these skills. Many other subjects would go well with Psychology, for example, Law and Sociology

In addition, students enrolled on the A Level 2 year linear programme will be entered for the AS exam (see below for information). Your grade from this exam will be used to inform your predicted grades for UCAS.
