Careers Centre

Our Careers Centre is open to all students seeking information and advice on courses, careers, work or training opportunities. The centre has a wide variety of resources including career guides and university prospectuses. Careers advisors are also available for drop-in enquiries and personal appointments.

Choosing a career

While at RuTC, students are encouraged through the tutorial programme and the Careers Centre to help make good decisions for their future. Most students progress to the right course,  job or other opportunities after college.

Choosing the right course to study at RuTC

It is important to consider what you are going to study at college, whether or not you have a particular career in mind. If you have a specific career or progression pathway (such as a university degree) in mind, we will help you to decide what course(s) to take in order to reach your goals. We support all students to decide on the best options for them.

Progression

The college works to ensure that students are comprehensively supported to make informed choices in relation to their progress. This includes internal progression from one level to the next or alternative courses, progression to higher education or apprenticeships, progression to alternative training providers or into work. Each student will join RuTC at a different level (1, 2 or 3) and therefore will be supported on their individual journey. The aim is for every student to fulfill their potential at college and be in a strong position to move on from RuTC.

Employability

Finding and securing employment is increasingly competitive. It is very important that our students are well prepared to enter the job market when they leave college. Our careers advisors will help students to prepare a CV and write covering letters to potential employers. They are also experienced in guiding students through the evermore complex job application process.

For those students who decide that they want to move into work rather than go to university there are some excellent opportunities available to combine both work and training; the most well-known being apprenticeships. Our careers advisors will assist students to source relevant vacancies using their specialist knowledge of industry sectors and Apprenticeship providers.

Each year the college invites a number of employers and training providers to attend its annual Higher Education and Careers Fair. All students have the opportunity to talk to many well-known organisations and find out more about working for them.

During the year the careers team will organise speakers from different employment sectors to encourage students to think about their future career aspirations.

Going to university?

What qualifications will you need to go to university?
Most universities require level 3 qualifications and will accept either 3 A Levels, a vocational extended diploma or a combination of academic and vocational. Specific entry requirements vary considerably from course to course, and between universities. GCSE results are a guide to universities of your academic ability. A core entry requirement is for a minimum grade 5 in GCSE English and Maths, and grade C in GCSE Science for some degrees.

Universities from all over the UK attend RuTC's Higher Education and Careers Fair to give advice to students who are thinking about going to university.

Some career choices will involve studying for a degree, and may require further professional exams to become fully qualified. However for many other careers, skill-based qualifications and work training experience are most valued.
