Summary

This qualification is designed to enable learners to access higher education upon successful completion of the programme, or to progress into the workplace. The qualification is structured to allow learners to pursue their interests in specific areas of social care, health studies and health sciences, whilst still allowing for a diversity of options to maintain a broad range of progression opportunities.

Modules studied include: safeguarding in health and social care, infection prevention and control, psychological perspectives, sociological perspectives, reflective practice and communication in health and social care.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be continuously assessed through your assignment tasks. Assignments are set throughout the year, so you will know how well you are doing through regular one-to-one feedback from your tutor.

What do I need to join?

Five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English Language, Maths and Science. An acceptable DBS clearance and academic reference. Applicants will also need to successfully pass a taster day and a six-week probationary period.

Previous work

Maths & English

All learners must have a grade C or above in Maths and English to enrol on the Level 3 programme. Functional Skills are embedded within the curriculum and learners are fully prepared for HEI entrance exams.

Employability

Learners who complete the Level 3 Technical Certificate (1 year) can progress onto apprenticeships and employment within the HSC sector.

Learners who complete the Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma (2 years) can progress onto studying different types of nursing, midwifery, social work, youth work, radiography, paramedic science and youth work at HE level. Other HE routes include sociology, psychology and law.

Work Experience

Learners will be required to attend placement in a real work environment to support their learning. The minimum required number of placement hours are:

  • Certificate: 75 hours
  • Extended Diploma: 175 hours (includes the 75 hours completed during the Certificate).

What can I do next?

Successful completion of this qualification will allow learners to progress into higher education in a related field, to gain employment in the sector or to gain an apprenticeship.
