Overview

Biology A-level follows the AQA specification. It is a dynamic and engaging course during which you will develop your practical skills through regular laboratory work and required practicals. The theoretical side of the course explores topics from the smallest biological molecules to global ecosystems; anatomy and physiology, biochemical pathways and genetics. Biology A-level is the stepping stone to a wide variety of degree and career choices: it complements creative and humanities-based subjects and is the perfect foundation for a degree and career in the natural sciences and medical and veterinary studies.

Year one:

  • Biological molecules
  • Cells
  • Organisms exchange substances with their environment
  • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

Year two:

  • Energy transfers in and between organisms
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
  • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
  • The control of gene expression

Additionally 12 core practical activities will be carried out throughout the A-level programme.

How will my work be assessed?

100% written external examinations- three two hour papers in year 2.

What can I do after this?

Higher education at university or college to study medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, marine biology, forensic science, nursing or physiotherapy.

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Maths and English Language
  • Subject-specific entry requirements must also be met:
    Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths to study A-level Maths
    Grade 5 or above in GCSE Science to study A-levels in the Sciences
    Grade 5 or above in either GCSE English Language or Literature to study A-level English
