Construction Level 1

You will be introduced to the world of construction at our dedicated training facility comprising of full-scale workshops, where you will be taught by qualified, experienced staff that have all had industry based experience within their vocational areas. They will guide and assist you in your learning and help you to fully understand the particulars of this profession. State of the art workshops, equipped with professional quality tools, means that you will be learning in an environment which simulates a real-life building site.

Course themes:

- Health, safety & welfare in construction
- Painting & decorating
- Plastering, block paving, concrete finishes
- Basic plumbing & carpentry - locks, latches & woodwork joints

You will be given the opportunity to gain CSCS (construction skills certification scheme) card and undertake work experience.

If you are 16 to 19 years old on a full-time course will be offered balanced, high quality study programmes to open up your options and give you the best chance of progression into further training opportunities or lasting employment. We will also create opportunities for students to take part in work experience.

A study programme is to consists of a substantial core programme of study (bricklaying), combined with maths, English and any additional learning or work experience.

If you have not yet achieved GCSE grade 4 in English and maths at 16 you will be required to continue to studying these subjects, by taking Functional Skills.

For the non-qualification hours, you are also required to undertake an employability programme and/or where appropriate work experience, which is relevant to their course of study.

Practical sessions will take place in dedicated construction workshops and theory in a mixture of classroom/workshop and home study environments. You will develop basic knowledge, technical and practical skills across a variety of trade subjects.

Career Prospects

Caretaker / Property Maintenance Salaries: Starter: £15,000 to £17,000 Experienced: £18,000 to £20,000 Highly Experienced: £27,000 to £35,000

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grades 2-1 including English or maths.

Additional Details

- You will be continuously assessed throughout the course, this will involve both practical and theoretical aspects to enable you to complete unit assessments online and practical assessments at the end of each unit.

- The skills you will need to be successful in the construction industry include: • multi-tasking ability and a flexible approach to work • the ability to follow written and spoken instructions • to be comfortable working at height • excellent teamworking skills • physical fitness Equipment You will be required to wear personal protective equipment on the course in line with industry expectations.

After the course

You can continue to bricklaying at a more advanced level or study a complimentary construction trade. You may also progress to employment and apprenticeship training programmes. Our qualifications can lead directly into employment, offering learners the chance to develop their skills and knowledge to a high standard recognised by the construction industry.
