Engineering - Foundation Diploma Level 3

This course is suitable for you if you want to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare for employment, a higher apprenticeship or higher education in the engineering field.

During the course, you will learn both through studying and practical elements, as well as work experience placements.  The topics cover all main engineering principles as well as the design and manufacture of products and the processes involved in these.  Safety and quality assurances and principles will also be reviewed, to ensure that you are ready to enter the workplace.

Your first taste of industry will be via work experience placements, at a range of the best engineering companies in the UK, including: Syspal, Makita, Denzo, BAE Systems and Muller.

Career Prospects

Civil engineering technician - civil engineering technicians provide technical support to civil engineers on construction projects. Salary: £14,000 to £45,000 average per year. CAD technician - computer-aided design (CAD) technicians use software to design buildings, machinery, goods and components. Salary: £15,000 to £35,000 average per year. Engineering construction technician - install, service and repair machines and equipment in buildings, factories and industrial plants. Salary: £18,000 to £32,000 average per year. Skills The skills you will need to be successful in the engineering industry include: • maths, science and IT skills • the ability to read technical plans • organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads • excellent problem-solving skills

Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs grade 9 to 4 including English and maths for this course. When you apply to the college we will invite you in for an interview to discuss the course and your career ambitions. If you don’t quite get the grades you need for the course our information and guidance team will be able to support with you to find a suitable course at the college.

- You will be assessed through a number of assignments, coursework and exam-based.

- Facilities Learn in the Discovery Centre, our bespoke engineering centre, with machinery supplied by some of the top engineering companies in the UK. Qualification This course leads to a National Foundation Diploma in Engineering Level 3.

After the course

You can continue your Telford College education, progressing to a HND in General Engineering Level 5, which could be topped up to a full degree in the engineering field of your choice.
