Programme Design and Overview

Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from microorganisms to mammoths.  Biology is never far from the headlines either ...

The human genome has been sequenced and we know the complete arrangement of the three thousand million bases that make up human DNA.  In Kenya 350 people die every day from AIDS and in South East Asia the skies are dark with smoke as the last Bornean rainforests are burned to grow oil palms.  Biologists are concerned with all these issues.  They work in the fields of cell biology, medicine, food production and ecology ... and the work they do is vital to us all.

What you will Study

In the first year, you will study the following topics:

Core content:

Biological molecules
Cells
Organisms exchange substances with their environment.
Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms.

In the second year you will study the following topics:

Energy transfers in and between organisms.
Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments.
Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.
The control of gene expression.

Your practical and investigative skills in Biology will be developed by undertaking 12 compulsory practical sessions during your course. However, additional practical work will be integrated wherever it is appropriate to the topic.

How you will Learn You will be learning through a variety of methods including, lectures, discussion, class activities, individual activities, laboratory practical work and field work. Independent learning skills will be developed making use of up-to-date technology.
Course Structure

There are 8 Units of study
12 Compulsory Practical Sessions
3 exam papers (2 hours each) taken at the end of 2 years

In exceptional circumstances, an AS-Level examination in Biology may be taken at the end of one year (40% of one A-Level).

Nature of Assessments on the Programme Throughout the course your level of attainment will be gauged by regular tests and homework assignments. A-Level exams (3 papers - 2 hours each) will take place at the end of the second year of the course. 10% of the examination marks will be awarded for mathematical skills and 15% will be awarded for questions based upon the compulsory practical element of the course.
Entry Requirements 5 GCSEs 9-4 including English Language at grade 4 and maths at grade 6.
AND
Dual Science at grade 6/6. Separate sciences 6/6/5 (i.e. Biology and one other Science at grade 6).
Attendance Expectations

As a full-time student you will be expected to attend all classes as specified on your timetable and all personal tutorial sessions.

NB 100% attendance in all your A level sessions is essential to achieve high grades.

Attendance - Please note This is part of a full-time study programme. It may be available as a standalone fee paying course that is not part of a full-time study programme subject to sufficient interest. For further information call the Course Information Team on 01924 789111.
Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Further Study

Biology is regarded as a 'facilitating subject' which will increase your chance of progression to a Russell Group University.

Students progress to degree courses such as microbiology, genetics, biomedical science, biochemistry, nursing, medicine, zoology, veterinary science, pure biology and many more.

You might prefer to study the one year HNC in Applied Biology at Wakefield College and then take up employment in a laboratory setting,.

Career Opportunities Qualifications in Biology provide many exciting and varied employment including health and clinical professions such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, optometry, zoology, marine biology, forensic science. Careers directly related to Biology include conservation officer, lab technician, science writer, botanist, environmental health officer. Many other careers are open to Biology graduates such as law, journalism, librarianship, museum work, publishing. See the Institute of Biology's website (www.iob.org) for further details.
