Description

On this exciting study programme in the very popular digital sector, you can study areas such as computer systems, networking, programming, games design, system security, website design and technology, and animation. The Level 3 elements comprise of technical computer fundamentals, Python, HTML, Basic Java scripting and security in the technology industry. The Extended Diploma is a two-year course. The first year is equivalent to one A Level (Foundation Diploma) and successful completion of the first year will allow progression to Year 2 to complete a total of three A Level equivalents, graded from Pass to Distinction*. The qualification enables learners to explore a choice of sector areas, enabling progression to either higher education or employment in the computing sector (depending on previous experience and final grade). This course is delivered as two qualifications, each a year long. Students who are 18 years old when they start Year 1 will therefore be 19 at the start of Year 2 and may be subject to fees for the Year 2 qualification. All learners will need to successfully complete the Year 1 qualification to be able to progress to the Year 2 qualification.

Other optional units are delivered. For the Extended Diploma you will need an additional six units and for the Foundation Diploma you will need two:

  • Managing and Supporting Systems

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through written exams and project-based exams on this course.

Entry requirements

You will need to have achieved 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above in suitable areas including Maths and English; or a Merit in a Level 2 course plus GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above.

You will receive a conditional offer of a place at college, which means that you MUST meet the entry requirements to be able to enrol in the summer. We will provide details of how you can send us your results following GCSE results day, to allow you to complete your enrolment with us.

Career progression

On successful completion of this course you will be able to consider a wide range of employment opportunities in many areas such as communications, administration, software and hardware development, commerce, software engineering, user support and networking which could be part of an Apprenticeship programme if you wish to continue to learn while you earn!

Further course information

Attendance will be normally three days a week at college with a fourth day of Independent Learning, which can be carried out in college or at home.

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We're here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade 9 - 4 (previously A* - C) in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a grade 3 (previously D) will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve a grade 2 (previously E) or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade 9 - 4 (previously A* - C) in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Industry Placements are an integral part of the study programme for all FE Learners at WCG. Learners on Level 1 and 2 programmes will be required to undertake 60 hours of relevant placement per academic year and Learners at Level 3 will be required to undertake between 72 hours up to 315 hours (45 day placement) per year depending on requirements of Maths and English.

These changes could affect fees, dates and how the course is taught. Courses may be taught in different ways and could include both face and remote delivery. Remote delivery means learning through logging into classes through a computer. The fees for a course may be slightly more or less than advertised.

Sometimes, there are not enough people wanting to do a course to make it possible for us to run that course. If this happens, applicants will be offered another course in a similar subject area.
