About the course

A programme suitable for learners who wish to seek a career in the Carpentry and Joinery industries. This one year course covers all the basic hand skills needed to get a start in this profession. Learners will be taught by professional tutors who are regularly updated in construction techniques. The course is a mixture of practical and theoretical teaching using the latest techniques and equipment.

Entry requirements

Two GCSE's Grade E (2) or above. It is expected in the first instance that the applicant will have a genuine interest in the construction industry and each applicant will be required to attend an interview to ascertain his/her suitability for the course as well as take a short aptitude test.

Carpentry and Joinery Diploma Level 1

What you'll learn (core modules)

Units covered in this course are as follows and will be assessed by a combination of practical tests, online tests, paper based tests and assignments:

Principles of Building Construction Information and Communication

Maintain and use Carpentry and Joinery Hand Tools

Prepare and use Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools

Produce Woodworking Joints

Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment will be throughout the year and will be a mixture of practical and theory.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

Learners will be taught by professional tutors who are regularly professionally updated in construction techniques and taught in a large airy workshop in the Milburn Centre.

Where will the course take me?

Successful completion of this course can lead onto the Level 2 full-time course or onto a Level 2 Apprenticeship (this is subject to securing a placement in the construction industry).

Of the students who completed this course last year 86% continued with their current programme of study and the remaining 11% entered employment.

Will I need any materials or equipment?

Safety boots, TMC branded clothing and basic stationery materials and a basic toolkit (a list will be provided at interview.) A recommended book list will be provided upon enrolment onto the course.
