About the course
This is an ideal course for learners wanting to develop their engineering skills and explore their opportunities within this innovation-led industry. It is equivalent to one and a half A levels and is an excellent choice for those wanting a career in Engineering and who prefer a vocational alternative to A levels. The course covers all the core aspects of engineering which provides a broad background, that will lead into year two of the Extended Diploma in Engineering.
Entry requirements
Entry is by interview. Either a minimum of five GCSE's Grade C or above, including English at Grade C (4) or above and maths at Grade B (5) or above, or an EdExcel Level Two Diploma with appropriate grades in relevant units; GNVQ Intermediate Award containing relevant units. Alternatively, applications from mature students with relevant industrial experience are welcome.
Qualifications
The College offers a wide menu of Level Three Diplomas. We will work with all learners in their first six weeks at College to place them on the appropriate Diploma programme best suited to meet the individual's needs and best ensures their success. Within this course, students will have the opportunity to take either EdExcel Level Three Extended Diploma in Electro-Mechanical Engineering, EdExcel Level Three Diploma in Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or EdExcel Level Three Subsidiary Diploma in Electro-Mechanical Engineering.
What you'll learn (core modules)
A core number of subjects which include: Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace, Business and Quality Systems, Mathematics, Electrical / Electronic and Mechanical principles. Specialist subjects which include: Computer Aided Drawing (CAD), Thermodynamics, Static and Dynamic Mechanics, Electronic Devices, Digital and Analogue Systems, Programmable Logic Circuit Machinery and Microcontrollers.
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.
Where will the course take me?
The course is suitable for those who want to study engineering at university, or for those who want to become Higher Technicians or Advanced Apprentices in this sector. Possible career opportunities would be Maintenance Engineer, Technician Engineer, Design/Development Engineer, Systems Engineer or Software/Robotics Engineer.
