Engineering BTEC (L3)

Entry Requirements are a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English, Maths (Grade B) and Science. Other relevant Level 2 qualifications and Diplomas may also be considered. You should have a good attendance report from school and complete a successful interview. Applications are welcomed from mature students who may have the relevant industrial experience or other suitable qualifications.

There are eighteen units to complete that covers a diverse range of subject areas such as Mechanical Principles, Electrical Principles, Engineering Materials and Computer Aided Design (CAD). The qualification is delivered through a variety of theoretical type learning (classroom based) and specialist workshop sessions. Year 1 – Units for 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering Year 2 – Units for Full Extended Diploma in Engineering You will study the following five core units: • Communications for Technicians • Electrical & Electronic Principles • Health & Safety • Mathematics for Technicians • Mechanical Principals • Project Year 1 • CNC machining • Engineering Secondary and Finishing Processes and Techniques • Engineering Drawing • Fabrication Process and Technology • Health, Safety and Welfare • Maths for Technicians • Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) • Electrical/Electronic Principles • Engineering Materials Year 2 • Communications for Technicians • Mechanical Principles and Applications • Applications of Mechanical Systems in Engineering • Engineering Design • Engineering Project • Further Maths for Technicians • Primary Forming Processes • Measurement and Inspection

You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the College workshops. You will be assessed through internal assignments. You can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. This programme encourages you to undertake your own research to complete the tasks given to you so that you may produce written assignments.

Following successful completion of the programme, you may either progress onto our part-time HNC in Engineering or other Higher Education courses or seek apprenticeship in the Engineering Industry with opportunities for further part-time study. You may also gain employment within the Engineering Industry, an Apprenticeship and there may be a possibility to continue your studies at College.

It is compulsory that you wear safety boots/shoes and overalls, without which no practical work can be undertaken.

•If you are aged 16–18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary funds There are financial support arrangements for 16–18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
